Thanks to all of you for making this idea of a community basketry event a reality! I have received so many positive responses to the overall event. This blog is a way to thank all of you! There is a long list of thanks, because it took a whole community of support to make this event happen!

The first thanks goes to Sara and David Lieberman for collecting, raising the awareness and giving contemporary basketry validation as a fine art form. Your support has given us opportunities to explore and to expand the definition of basketry. You willingness to share your collection and to allow it to travel for months is so generous. Sara, thank you for coming and braving the stormy weather! Your presence and input made the event so special. Your gallery talks during the opening reception were so informative and thought provoking, bravo! Thank you! Heather Lineberry, Interim Director and Chief Curator at the ASU Museum, for creating the first “Intertwined: Contemporary Baskets from the Sara and David Lieberman Collection” exhibition at ASU and then traveling it to several venues across the country including here to Bellevue Arts Museum. Thank you Michael Monroe, Director of Curatorial Affairs and Stefano Catalani, Curator at Bellevue Arts Museum (BAM) for scheduling the exhibit and bringing it to our area! The exhibition is beautifully installed! Special thanks to Patrick McMahon, BAM’s Education Curator who worked with Mary Irvine and me in the planning stages of the “Passion for Baskets Symposium 09”. Your willingness to include us truly made this a collaborative effort. Thank you agreeing to do a collaborative postcard that included all of the events.

Thanks to the artists, Ferne Jacobs, Kate Anderson, Nancy Moore Bess, Charissa Brock and Jane Chavez each of you had very fascinating presentations and to Sara Lieberman and Heather Lineberry for your excellent presentations at the Symposium, we all learned a lot from your conversations! Nothing more to say, but well done!

What would we have done without the arts organizations N.W. Basket Weavers, Northwest Designer Craftsmen and Arts Council of Snohomish County, who all donated funds to make the Symposium at BAM possible. Special thanks go to Mary Irvine who suggested the possibilities of having a Symposium sponsored by the N.W. Basket Weavers Guild. Mary dedicated many personal hours to help organize and plan the Symposium. She amazes me with her efficiency and organizational skills. The N.W. Basket Weavers donated the majority of the funds for the Symposium and also donated a webpage on their website to get information out about all of the weekend events. Thanks Louie Shellenberger for keeping the event page updated. Northwest Designer Craftsmen donated funds toward the Symposium and made it possible for us to have a bus tour. All the funds went through the NWDC treasurer, Beth Wyatt, who also read through contracts and paid our bills! The bus tour organizers included NWDC Education Director Layne Goldsmith and Danielle Bodine, NWDC member. How can I thank you for working so cooperatively with me to pull the bus tour together so quickly! The success of the tour was due to teamwork! Thank you Carie Collver and The Arts Council of Snohomish County for not only putting on an excellent exhibit featuring NWDC and N.W. Weaver’s members, but also finding funds to sponsor Heather Lineberry’s travel expenses. Thank you Mary Alice for donating to The Arts Council with specific funds toward our event! Delores Taylor (NWDC Exhibition Chair) Dorothy McGuinness and Katherine Lewis (NWBW members) deserve shout outs for organizing the Snohomish Arts Council’s exhibit. All organizations publicized and helped get information out to the their members!

Thank you the participating galleries, Arts Council of Snohomish County, the Fountainhead Gallery, Museo, Pacini Lubel Gallery and Snow Goose Associates, Inc. for agreeing to have basketry exhibits in coordination with the BAM Exhibit opening reception making this a region wide event, generating publicity and putting on excellent exhibitions! Each piece was beautifully installed. Also, thanks to all of you for sponsoring our special guests on the bus tour! These galleries were chosen because of there prior support of basketry. Please support them by telling everyone about their exhibits!

Individual thanks go to - Nancy Moore Bess for being our Tour Guide on the bus tour! You did a terrific job! Bob Donegan and Nancy Bogue at Ivar’s Salmon House Restaurant who donated appetizers and a discount on the buffet for the bus tour lunch, David A. and David R. Boxley, internationally known N.W. Coast Tshimshian artists and culture bearers who donated their time by welcoming and entertaining our bus tour guests. Friends of Fiber Art International for offering a free membership to one of our guests on the tour bus and also for the funds to create the catalog for the traveling exhibition. Marci McDade, editor of Fiber Arts Magazine who donated current issues of Fiber Art Magazine to our bus tour guests and who plans to cover our event with an article in their Magazine! Wendy Borrou, a writer who stepped in to cover the bus tour for Marci who was unable to attend because of the flooding in our area. Tenacious Marci did make it to the Symposium after the flood subsided and made an effort to visit several of the participating galleries! You rock Marci!

There were people who without a blink of an eye help out! Thanks you Lynn Sealey (who has for years supported and collected basketry) for hosting Ferne Jacobs, artist and speaker at the symposium, Polly Adams Sutton (famous cedar bark artist) for hosting Jane Chavez, speaker at the symposium, Patti King, (multi talented fiber artist) and host to Nancy Moore Bess, speaker at the symposium and Cathy Wice (huge supporter and dedicated collector of basketry) who came to participate in our event from St. Louis. Cathy rented a car and offered and provided transportation during the event! Marilyn Moore, you saved the day when you picked up Charissa Brock from the airport and escorted her to the Symposium. And Charissa Brock, flood waters may have stopped you from attending the reception and bus tour, but your effort to keep your commitment as one of the speakers at the symposium and fly from Portland to Seattle was huge! Patti King and Danielle Bodine deserve special thanks for planning special artists’ studio tours for Sara. Janiece Jonsin, thank you for helping put together the collaborative promotional postcard. Danielle Bodine, who always asked “what can I do to help” pitched in and helped plan and support the event! And, of course my husband Chris Hopkins who is always a great support in all that I do!

And last, but not least, thank YOU who came and participated by attending all the events! Without you, this event could not have happened!

Lunch at Ivar's Salmon House Restaurant

Lunch was served at Ivar’s Salmon House, a beautiful cedar replica of a Northwest Indian Longhouse, complete with an open-pit Native American-style barbecue for preparing succulent alder-smoked dishes. We had lunch in a setting filled with Northwest coast native art, décor and historical photographs. David R. Boxley and David A. Boxley, internationally known Tshimshian artists and culture bearers who welcomed the bus tour with song and storytelling. They were a real highlight to our day! The buffet included crab cakes, calamari and grilled prawns for appetizers and alder-grilled Coho salmon and alder-grilled chicken for entrees. The service and atmosphere was excellent!

Wrap Up

It has been a little over a week now and I have had time to regroup and reflect on the entire event. Just before this event, we were faced with a real economic downturn, record breaking snow storm and then the floods. To be honest, there were some sleepless nights wondering if anyone would be willing to make the trip. But, you call came! There were a few small glitches, but for the most part the weekend was a success! I understand there were those of you who tried to come, but could not come because of road closures due to flooding. But, after the water subsided, you made your way over to see the BAM exhibition and the gallery exhibits! I am still getting feedback from the galleries that there people forming individual tour groups, some coming back with friends. We need to bottle this enthusiastic positive energy and keep it with us in 09! And thank you for all your kind responses to the entire event.

Let’s continue to create community efforts collaborating with Museums, arts organizations, artists collectors and art enthusiasts! We are living in uncertain times, but there is strength in numbers!
